Standard stall sizes answer the general question. This guide answers the next question every serious owner asks: what about the specific horse?

      The 12x12 stall is the industry default. It works for a large portion of horses in a large portion of barns, which is why it became the default in the first place. It is also the wrong answer for a meaningful portion of horses and the wrong starting point for any barn planning to house them.

      Our team fields sizing questions on nearly every project. The pattern behind those questions is consistent. An owner has read the general guidance on stall dimensions, understands the 12x12 baseline, and then raises a follow-up question that the general guidance does not address. What about the mare who will foal in this stall? What about the warmblood who stands sixteen-three at the shoulder? What about the draft the family just brought home? What about the pony program that runs eight lesson horses through the same barn?

      What follows is a framework for sizing stalls beyond the standard, organized around the four cases that come up most often in private facility planning.

      Why did the 12x12 become the default?

      Before addressing the exceptions, it is worth naming why the standard exists. A 12x12 stall provides enough room for a horse of average size to turn, lie down, and rise without contact with the walls. It sizes cleanly into common barn footprints. It uses lumber and hardware efficiently. And it accommodates a broad range of light horse breeds, from Quarter Horses to Thoroughbreds to most Arabians, without modification.

      For the horse who fits this profile, the default works. The framework below addresses the horses that do not.

      Foaling stalls

      Foaling stalls are the clearest departure from the standard. A mare in late gestation and through parturition needs more space than the same mare in normal housing meaningfully, and the foal that arrives needs safe distance from walls, corners, and hardware during the first weeks of life.

      We recommend a minimum of 14x14 for a foaling stall, with 16x16 preferred where the barn footprint allows. The larger dimension serves three purposes:

      1. It gives the mare room to move during labor without becoming cast against a wall.
      2. It provides a safe recovery space for the foal to stand and nurse without being in close proximity to hard surfaces.
      3. And it accommodates the veterinary attention that a difficult foaling may require, without requiring staff to work in a cramped space.

      For barns that cannot commit permanent square footage to a dedicated foaling stall, the Hinged Partition offers a solution worth considering at the design stage.

      The Hinged Partition allows a standard 12x12 stall to expand into an adjoining space, opening it to 14x14, 16x16, or larger, depending on the neighboring footprint. In barns where two 12x12 stalls sit side by side, the hinged partition can open the wall between them entirely, creating a single stall with double the floor area for the weeks surrounding foaling.

      When the mare and foal move out of the specialized use, the partition closes, and the two standard stalls return to daily service.

      This modular approach fits the way most private facilities actually operate. Foaling is intermittent. Building a dedicated stall that sits empty most of the year is often the wrong use of the barn footprint. Building flexibility into the partition system solves the sizing question without sacrificing capacity.

      Foaling stall design extends beyond dimensions. The stall should offer smooth, gap-free interior surfaces at foal height, drainage suited to disinfection, and lighting that supports overnight observation without disrupting the mare's rest. These considerations go hand in hand with the sizing decision and should be planned together.

      Warmblood stalls

      The modern warmblood presents a sizing question that the 12x12 standard did not anticipate. A horse standing sixteen-two to seventeen-two at the shoulder, weighing thirteen to fifteen hundred pounds, occupies noticeably more floor space than the average light horse and generates noticeably more force when moving inside a stall.

      For warmbloods, we recommend 12x14 as a working minimum, with 14x14 preferred for horses at the upper end of the size range or for those spending significant hours confined. The additional dimension allows the horse to turn comfortably, lie down with room to fully extend, and rise without pressing against the walls.

      The height dimension matters as much as the floor plan. Standard Stall Front and partition heights designed for light horses may leave a large warmblood able to reach over the top of the stall front, which is both a safety concern and a source of hardware wear. This is where the stall front system itself becomes part of the sizing decision.

      For warmblood applications, our European Stall Front is generally the stronger choice over a sliding system. European Fronts scale vertically without the engineering trade-offs that taller sliding doors introduce, which matters when a horse's head clears the standard top rail. The vertical bar pattern of the European front also gives a large horse full visual access to the aisle and neighboring stalls at head height, supporting the social engagement that a confined warmblood particularly benefits from. And the fixed frame distributes impact across the full structure, rather than transferring force into a track system that will require ongoing attention in a stall housing a horse of this size and energy.

      Draft and draft-cross stalls

      Drafts and heavy draft crosses further complicate the sizing question. A Percheron, Belgian, or Clydesdale standing seventeen hands or taller, weighing eighteen hundred to two thousand pounds or more, requires substantially more space than the standard stall accommodates.

      The working minimum for draft stalls is 14x14, with 16x16 or larger appropriate for the largest individuals. Ceiling height, often overlooked in stall planning, becomes a specification rather than an assumption. A ten-foot ceiling that clears a light horse comfortably may not clear the head of a full draft when the horse raises to look over the stall front.

      The stall front recommendation for drafts follows the same logic as for warmbloods, and for the same reasons, is pushed further. The European Stall Front, specified in a taller configuration and with a wider swing-door leaf, is generally the correct answer. Height stops being a preference and becomes a requirement, because a full draft raising to look over the aisle will clear a standard top rail. Force tolerance moves from a maintenance consideration to a structural one, because the impact a two-thousand-pound horse generates against a sliding track shortens the life of the system in ways that a fixed European frame absorbs without complaint. And visual access to the European front supports the mental engagement of a horse, whose size makes confinement more consequential when isolation is added.

      Pony stalls

      Pony sizing runs in the opposite direction, and the temptation is to scale down the standard proportionally. That approach misreads what a stall needs to do.

      A pony still needs room to turn, lie down, and rise without wall contact. The absolute floor area required is smaller than that for a horse, but not proportionally smaller. A 10x10 stall serves most ponies well, and a 10x12 accommodates the larger pony breeds and pony-horse crosses.

      The more meaningful pony-specific considerations are height and hardware. Stall front and partition heights should be sized so that a pony can see over the top comfortably, which supports the social behavior that ponies particularly benefit from. Latches, feed door openings, and any hardware the pony will interact with should be positioned at pony height, not scaled down from horse-height installations.

      The framework is the same across all four cases. Start with the horse that will live in the stall. Confirm the minimum working size for that horse and its use case. Add dimension for specialized purposes such as foaling or extended confinement. And specify partition height, hardware placement, and construction rating to match the horse, not the barn footprint.
