Dutch Doors are one of our favorite barn door options for any horse barn. These doors offer a perfect blend of functionality, safety, and beauty. They ensure the comfort and well-being of your horses while providing practical benefits to you as a horseman. Whether you have a private recreational barn or commercial equestrian facility, we recommend barn Dutch Doors for a variety of reasons. These include:
Ventilation: Since the top door can open, air circulates freely, ensuring fresh air for the horses. This helps prevent respiratory problems and reduces strong odors in the barn.
Socialization: Horses are ultimately social animals. Allowing them to see out of their horse stall and interact with their environment can reduce feelings of isolation, promoting better mental well-being.
Flexibility: Our Dutch Door design offers you with flexibility. You can open only the top part for light and air or both for full access.
Weather Protection: Dutch Doors can act as a barrier against the elements. In colder climates, the bottom door can remain closed, blocking drafts, while the top can be opened for light and air.
Visibility: Opening the top allows you or your barn staff to quickly check on horses without fully entering the stall, providing an efficient way to monitor the well-being of each horse.
Aesthetic Appeal: Dutch Doors add a classic and charming touch to barns, enhancing the overall aesthetic value.
Whether you're considering an upgrade for your barn or you're simply curious about our Dutch Doors, we've got you covered. Dive into our comprehensive FAQ guide to get the lowdown on our luxury Dutch Doors.
Q: What is the standard size of a Dutch Door?
A: While we build custom barn doors to fit your exact specifications, our standard sizes typically measure 4’ W x 7’ H or 4’W x 8’H.
Q: How tall are the top and bottom doors of an 8' Dutch Door?
A: The bottom door is 49” tall and the top door is 45” tall.
Q: What type of steel do you use for the doors?
A: We use 100% American, pre-galvanized steel on all American Stalls Barn Doors. The Dutch doors are then crafted with a 10-gauge cold-rolled frame and 14-gauge 2” steel tubing for both top and bottom doors.
Q: What does "cold-rolled" mean for the frame?
A: A cold-rolled frame is made from steel that's been processed for enhanced strength, precision, and a superior finish, offering numerous advantages over hot-rolled steel. Ask your American Stalls Project Manager on how this is a stronger long-term option than traditional angle frames!
Q: Are the doors insulated or weatherproof?
A: Please keep in mind that this weatherstripping is usually not required in horse barns as we prefer that our barns breathe. For this reason, our Dutch Doors are not insulated. That being said, you can certainly procure weather or cushioned weather seals. You can then accordingly seal where the doors meet or install at the jamps to limit the cold drafts.
Q: Can I add lumber to the Dutch Doors?
A: Absolutely. We offer two designs suitable for vertical lumber in-fill. For optimal results, we suggest using 1-1/2” thick tongue and groove lumber.
Q: How wide are the cross bucks on the door?
A: Our cross bucks measure 4” in width, made of pre-galvanized 100% American steel, and are powder-coated to match the frame.
Q: Is it possible to add a glass design to the top door?
A: Yes, we offer various glass designs for our barn Dutch Doors. For safety, we always recommend pairing the glass design with our grill guard. This grill guard features 1/4” rods that are bolted behind your Barn Dutch Doors' windows. This ensures that your horses cannot access the glass.
Q: Do I need to provide my own glass?
A: We offer custom-cut tempered glass and installation prior to shipping from our facility. Alternatively, you can source and install the glass locally.
Q: What hardware is included with the Dutch Doors?
A: Our doors come with a non-locking stainless steel handle, a galvanized steel cane bolt, 304 stainless steel adjustable hinges, and two hold-back latches. You can see more clearly our powder coated hold back latches below.
Q: What does "pre-hung" mean for Dutch Doors?
A: Pre-hung means the door arrives already set within its frame. This simplifies installation as you're installing the entire assembly — door and frame together — rather than needing to align and hang the door slab separately.
Q: Do you offer Sliding exterior doors?
A: Yes, we craft custom Sliding Paddock Doors for side-entry door openings, built with the same premium materials and quality.
Q: How are the doors shipped?
A: Dutch Doors are carefully stacked on a pallet, shrink-wrapped, and banded for protection during transport.
Q: What type of truck will deliver the doors?
A: We use a flatbed truck that transports the Dutch doors directly from our facility to your barn. Our expert Project Manager and logistics will accordingly coordinate delivery.
Q: Can I collect the doors to save on shipping costs?
A: Yes, clients near our Missouri facility can pick up their Dutch Doors directly. Please kindly just coordinate with your American Stalls Project Manager.
Q: Is it challenging to install the Dutch Doors?
A: Installing steel-framed pre-hung Dutch doors in horse barns is relatively straightforward for someone experienced with construction or door installation. Our Dutch Doors will install just like any other residential door. Our Dutch Doors’ frame will go directly into your rough opening (RO). The inside of the frame is then screwed into the interior of your rough opening. It's vital to ensure that the door is level and plumb during installation. Use a level and make sure the door frame is square within the opening. This is crucial for the proper function of the Dutch door, given its two-part design.
Q: When should I install the lumber?
A: We recommend to first install the Dutch Door into your rough opening without any lumber installed. This is because the Dutch Doors are quite heavy and would be difficult to move with installed lumber. This is why we recommend to install lumber after your Doors are installed into the physical building.
