Jefferson Saddle Rack

Some objects in a tack room hold equipment. A few honor it. The Jefferson Saddle Rack is carved by hand from Greek oak in a workshop outside Athens, its curve checked and re-checked against the natural geometry of a saddle tree, then fitted with solid brass arms forged and hammered smooth. Your saddle rests along its full arc, no pressure points, no flattened panels, air moving freely around leather that stays supple. It arrives complete with matching mounting hardware, finished to the same standard as the rack itself.

One extraordinary object, made to outlast the saddles it carries.

How It Comes to Be

  1. The Selection
    • In the workshops outside Athens, the process begins not with tools but with judgment.
    • A craftsman walks among stacked hardwoods, only the finest blocks are chosen. The rest are returned, not discarded, but waiting for another purpose.
  2. The Carving
    • What was solid becomes fluid under practiced hands. The curve emerges slowly, checked and re-checked against the natural geometry of a saddle tree.
    • Too shallow and weight falls unevenly. Too steep and the saddle slides. Perfection lives in millimeters. This work cannot be rushed.
  3. The Brass
    • In a separate corner of the workshop, brass rods glow orange in the forge. While still pliable from heat, they are bent and shaped around forms, then hammered smooth.
    • Strength and beauty are not opposites here, they are partners. The metal cools into its final architecture: arms that will bear weight without bending, that will catch afternoon light and warm the eye.

  1. The Finishing
    • Days of sanding follow. Coarse grit first, to erase saw marks and rough spots. Then finer, and finer still, until the wood becomes silk under the palm.
    • Oil and wax are applied thin, allowed to penetrate, then buffed to a glow that seems lit from within. This is the surface your saddle will rest against. It must be worthy of that trust
  2. The Assembly
    • Brass meets wood. Hardware is fitted. Balance is tested. The rack is mounted, unmounted, adjusted until it hangs perfectly true. Only then does it leave the workshop, wrapped carefully, accompanied by matching hardware finished to the same exacting standard.
    • Everything you need to honor your saddle, complete in one extraordinary object.

Materials & Care

The Oak

Each Jefferson piece is carved from solid Greek oak, a dense, naturally stable hardwood prized by furniture makers for centuries. Because it is solid wood, no two pieces share the same grain, and yours will be unlike any other we have made. Over the years, oak mellows: warm golden tones deepen gently with light and time. This is not fading. It is the wood becoming yours.

Caring for the wood:
· Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Nothing more is needed for everyday care.
· Once a year, refresh the finish with a thin coat of hardwax oil, buffed to a glow. Five minutes of care, decades of return.
· Wipe any moisture — water, saddle soap, leather conditioner — promptly with a dry cloth. Brief contact does no harm; standing moisture should not be left overnight.
· Avoid silicone sprays, ammonia-based cleaners, and all-purpose polishes. They build residue that dulls a hand-rubbed finish.
· Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight and away from heaters, vents, and radiators, which dry wood unevenly.

The Brass

The solid brass details are forged and hammered by hand, then sealed under a fine protective lacquer so the warm glow you unbox is the glow you keep. No polishing, no upkeep, a soft, dry cloth is all the brass will ever ask of you.

One thing to know: never use brass polish or abrasive cleaners on a lacquered finish; they remove the protective coat rather than brighten the metal. If the lacquer ever wears through after years of honest use, contact us; we will tell you exactly how to restore it.

Sealed brass, oiled walnut, five minutes of care a year, built for thirty.

Where It Belongs

The Jefferson Collection is made for tack rooms, mudrooms, entryways, and enclosed, ventilated trophy walls where fine leather already lives. The honest rule: if your saddles and bridles are happy in the room, the walnut will be too. Leather and walnut thrive in the same conditions: moderate humidity, steady temperature, and good air movement.

A few placements we advise against, because we would rather you love this piece for thirty years:

· Not on wash-stall walls or anywhere subject to direct spray or steam

· Not in unconditioned spaces with hard seasonal swings, an uninsulated trailer through a winter, an unventilated shed through a humid summer

· Not in prolonged direct sun

A climate-controlled tack room is ideal. A well-built, ventilated barn tack room is entirely suitable; this is working hardware, made to be used.

What Is Normal (And What Is Not)

Normal, and part of the story: grain and tone variation between pieces; subtle seasonal movement of solid wood; the satin sheen of hardwax oil deepening slightly with each annual refresh.

Not normal, and covered: cracking, checking, or any failure of joinery or brass under proper use. If it happens, contact us; we stand behind every piece for life.

Mounting

Every Jefferson piece ships with matching brass-finished mounting hardware. Mount into a wall stud or solid masonry, never drywall anchors alone. The Saddle Rack carries the full weight of a fine English saddle with a generous margin; it deserves a wall that does the same.

Why It Matters

Your saddle is more than equipment, it is an extension of trust, connection, and craft. The Jefferson Rack honors that. By supporting weight along a natural arc rather than harsh pressure points, it preserves saddle shape and promotes the longevity of fine leather.

Structure remains true, even through seasons of use.

Built to endure. Designed to inspire. Made to last a lifetime.

Why People Choose the Jefferson

The curved design supports your saddle the way it sits on a horse. Tree stays true. Panels keep their shape.

* It keeps leather in riding condition
Air flows around the saddle so moisture doesn't get trapped. No mildew. No stiffness. No oiling brittle leather back to life. It stays supple.

* It makes your space feel intentional
Most tack rooms are functional at best. The Jefferson turns yours into something you're proud to show people, handcrafted wood and brass that looks as good as your saddle cost.

* It lasts
One Jefferson rack will outlast 5-10 cheap alternatives. Greek hardwood. Solid brass. Hand-finished. This is what "buy it for life" actually means.

Materials Chosen

We work exclusively with Greek oak, a rich, warm wood. The brass is hand-selected for its warmth and weight, chosen to age beautifully. These are materials that reward patience, that become more treasured as the years unfold.

Shaped by Hand

Slowly and With Love

In the Athens workshop, nothing is rushed. Each piece in the Jefferson Collection is hand-carved by artisans who learned their craft over lifetimes, not semesters. They bend wood with steam and intuition. Finish surfaces until they're silk beneath your fingertips. This is the work of hands that care.

The Art of Taking Time

We could produce these pieces faster. Make them more accessible. Scale the collection to meet demand. But we won't. Because true luxury isn't about having everything immediately. It's about having something irreplaceable. Each piece in the Jefferson Collection is made to order, shaped specifically for your space, your vision, your life.

Hear What Our Clients Have to Say

“The sales and shipping process was very easy! I actually reached out to the American Stalls team via Facebook to inquire about shipping times and they were very fast in their response and made sure my gates were sent out the next day. The product is high quality from the very start and has held up over time as well. When I first installed full size gates in my modest two stall barn, it instantly elevated the look of the stalls from a homemade project to professional job. The gates LOOK expensive. I was looking for a gate that was safe, well ventilated, and had a yoke for my horses’ heads to hang over. The full size gate ticked all the boxes. I love the construction, feel, and shine of the powdered coated steel, and they clean up so easily too! I couldn’t be happier with my gate choice.

The customer support also delivered high-quality service. They were very responsive both before and after the delivery. I had questions regarding shipping times before purchase and I received responses within 24 hours that put my mind at ease. They even worked with me to expedite my shipping in order to meet my desired timeframe. After delivery I received a lovely note in the mail thanking me for my patronage – a sweet touch that made me feel very valued!

I would recommenced American Stalls without a doubt! My AS stall fronts are beautifully constructed and always received compliments. I’m always sure to tell them where they came from and how much I love them! Every barn should have such high quality materials!

“We’ve been buying the Show Series portable stalls from American Stalls each year from the past four years. We’ve expanded our polo operations here in The Plains, VA and have needed more and more high-quality portable horse stalls. Our oldest stalls from American Stalls still hold up great even after years of usage. The newest portable stalls are (bought in May 2020) are especially well done and reveal a very high end product — including their welds, powder coat finish, and other key details. The newest stalls show American Stalls’ heavy investment in their commitment to their product quality. Thank you for a great product and a great customer experience!” – David McClung

Passion for Polo

As the owner of a large miniature horse sanctuary, we are often finding our needs to be met, somewhat challenged. Most equine operations gear towards full-sized horses. We then have to either adapt products or have them customized to fit our needs. However, when we found ourselves in need of a quarantine stall with relatively little advance notice, American Stalls not only fit the bill, but came through with flying colors.
The turnaround time to receive our order was super quick.

During the sales process, American Stalls made the decision-making process very easy and guided us with great information every step of the way. We love the look of the stalls and the high-quality materials. For portable stalls, they surprised us by how sturdy they are and we expect to use them for years to come. Overall, the team at American Stalls delivered superior customer support. We loved meeting Yash in-person even as he traveled through the Midwest and we were proud to show him our new facility. Lastly, I absolutely recommend American Stalls to any equestrian facility who cares about quality and professionalism. We couldn’t be happier with our decision to purchase our stalls from them.

No tools required, no small parts to get lost in the shuffle… We chose to have two yoked gates so that the children and seniors we visit off-site can access the minis from both sides of the stall. We just set up our new stalls for our 4-H Horse Camp and the kids and parents all loved them. They were very excited about the bars allowing for plenty of airflow as our old portable stalls were solid all the way to the top. The new stalls went together easier too! The presenters at the horse camp were so impressed they asked where we got the stalls from and are thinking about purchasing some of their own.

Working with American Stalls was a pleasure. The representatives were extremely cordial and responsive and attentive to our needs. They assisted us with all aspects of the transaction both professionally and thoroughly. Any inquiries made were met with a more than timely response.
The portable stalls assemble quickly, go together easily and have withstood a full year of shows with no visible wear and tear, a true testament to their durability. The stalls are both attractive and durable as has been proven by the number of horses that have been in and out of the stalls. Their website contains loads of pictures, and the information is very representative of the product; a good quality product with good customer service.
