FAQ'S

01
Is the yoke opening safe? Can my horse get stuck?

Yes, the yoke is the safest part of the design. The opening is engineered wide enough for a horse to withdraw its head freely from any angle, with fully radiused, smooth edges and no pinch points. The European yoke design has been the standard in fine European barns for generations, precisely because they let horses socialize.

02
Can I purchase American Stalls horse stall gates from any location inthe United States?

Yes, we have clients throughout the United
States, Canada, and Mexico. Our experienced team of logistics professionals will coordinate the best shipping method to your location.

03
Can a hoof get caught in the mesh?

No. The lower mesh is sized at 2" × 2" and built from 3-gauge mesh — 0.25" steel rods — deliberately tighter than a hoof, so a pawing or rolling horse can't pass a foot through. It's an incredibly durable mesh, safe for foals, ponies, and miniatures as well as full-sized horses.

04
Are these Stall Gates heavy?

Compared to other Stall Gates on the market, our Stall Gates tend to be “heavy.” This is because we build our Stall Gates to be extremely heavy-duty. We use strong steel tubing and mesh for each component to ensure it withstands the rigors of your barn.

05
Will my horse chew or crib on it — and will the finish hold up?

Steel is the answer to chewing — there's nothing for teeth to get a purchase on, unlike wood doors. Our powder coat is non-toxic, and it's applied over pre-galvanized steel for lasting protection. The finish will hold up to daily barn life, but powder coat is powder coat: if your horse chews or cribs on the gate, we recommend being diligent about touching up the finish, since the powder coat is what protects the galvanized steel beneath it from rust. A few minutes of touch-up keep the gate protected for decades.

06
How tall is the Grilled Stall Gate?

Our Grilled Stall Gate is 58” tall. This measurement is from the bottom-most frame to the top-most frame.

07
Can it take a kick?

Our Stall Gates are built to withstand the daily rigors of a working horse barn, including kicking, high-gauge steel framing and a welded mesh lower section are designed to absorb the realities of stall life — kicks, leans, and a 1,200-pound shoulder against it. This is the same steel standard we build into barns for some of the most
demanding facilities in the country.

08
Would you recommend the Full-Sized Stall Gate or the Grilled Stall Gate?

To begin, the main two differences are the gates’ dimensions and the top designs. Our Full-Size Stall Gate is 65” tall, but the bottom of the yoke begins at roughly 48” tall. In contrast, our Grilled Stall Gates are 58” tall without a yoke opening.

Your decision will ultimately depend on multiple factors and your personal preference. Our Grilled Stall Gates were designed to be standalone horse stall doors that promote a simple, yet timeless look. This design is particularly particular among barns that feature English disciplines. In contrast, our Full-Sized Stall Gate is a more traditional stall gate design.

09
Are these Stall Gates difficult to install?

Our Stall Gates are exceptionally quick and easy to install. We pre-drill holes on one side of each stall gate. We also place our logo on both sides of each stall door. This allows you to flip the stall gate to install it as you need. We also provide all necessary installation hardware, including hinges, bolts, screws, a screw eye, a carabiner clip, and a gate chain. Most clients can install our Stall Gates without a general contractor. Each gate usually takes no more than 15 minutes to install.

10
Our door opening is 48” and the Stall Gate is 51” wide. How can I fit it in the door opening?

Our Stall Gates are 51” wide, but our clients install into smaller door openings all the time. We have seen our clients successfully and safely install our Stall Gates into openings ranging from 43” wide to 52” wide. If you have an existing sliding stall door, we would recommend to mount our Stall Gates on the stall’s interior to swing into the stall. If you have flexibility, you can then mount our Stall Gates on either the horse stall’s exterior or interior.

11
What latch does itcome with?

Every gate includes our standard latching mechanism — a gate chain, carabiner clip, and screw eye — designed for seamless handling whether you're installing the gate against a post, an existing stall front, or another framing setup. If you intend to mount your stall gate flush with your door opening, so it swings outward into the aisle, you can add our Universal Gate Latch.

12
Can I use itoutdoors or in a wash-adjacent area? Will it rust?

Absolutely. Every stall gate has a pre-galvanized steel core plus a UV-stabilized powder coat finish — two independent layers of corrosion protection. Galvanizing fights rust from the inside; the powder coat seals it from the outside. For exterior installations, we simply recommend being diligent about touching up the powder coat if inclement weather ever damages the finish — especially in coastal regions like Wellington, Florida, and along the East Coast. Take care of the finish, and the gate will take care of itself for decades.

13
How does a steel gate this size actually ship?

Carefully. Every Stall Gate is fully boxed in prepackaged cartons, then palletized for safe handling and shipped via LTL freight carriers with whom we have longstanding relationships. All orders are dispatched from our facility within 3 business days of purchase.

14
What if my gate arrives damaged?

Please contact us with a photo within 24 hours of delivery, and our team will make it right.

15
During installation, how much space should I leave for the door’s opening?

We always recommend leaving at least 1” between the Stall Gate’s bottom frame and your floor. This will ensure enough clearance for your Stall Gate to seamlessly operate. If you install the Stall Gate flush into a door opening, we then recommend roughly an additional 1-1/2” between the door frame and your wood post.

16
What do I mount it to, and can it swing in either direction?

The gate mounts to a solid wood post, wooden door frame, or steel stall framing, and it can be hung to swing left or right, in or out, depending on your setup — that's why every gate comes with pre-drilled holes. Out of the box, we provide a standard gate latching mechanism — a gate chain, carabiner clip, and screw eye — to handle latching in nearly any configuration. If you're mounting the gate flush into a door opening, we also offer our Universal Gate Latch.

Real Experiences with American Stalls

Dixon, MO

“The sales and shipping process was very easy! I actually reached out to the American Stalls team via Facebook to inquire about shipping times and they were very fast in their response and made sure my gates were sent out the next day. The product is high quality from the very start and has held up over time as well. When I first installed full size gates in my modest two stall barn, it instantly elevated the look of the stalls from a homemade project to professional job. The gates LOOK expensive. I was looking for a gate that was safe, well ventilated, and had a yoke for my horses’ heads to hang over. The full size gate ticked all the boxes. I love the construction, feel, and shine of the powdered coated steel, and they clean up so easily too! I couldn’t be happier with my gate choice.

The customer support also delivered high-quality service. They were very responsive both before and after the delivery. I had questions regarding shipping times before purchase and I received responses within 24 hours that put my mind at ease. They even worked with me to expedite my shipping in order to meet my desired timeframe. After delivery I received a lovely note in the mail thanking me for my patronage – a sweet touch that made me feel very valued!

I would recommenced American Stalls without a doubt! My AS stall fronts are beautifully constructed and always received compliments. I’m always sure to tell them where they came from and how much I love them! Every barn should have such high quality materials!

“We’ve been buying the Show Series portable stalls from American Stalls each year from the past four years. We’ve expanded our polo operations here in The Plains, VA and have needed more and more high-quality portable horse stalls. Our oldest stalls from American Stalls still hold up great even after years of usage. The newest portable stalls are (bought in May 2020) are especially well done and reveal a very high end product — including their welds, powder coat finish, and other key details. The newest stalls show American Stalls’ heavy investment in their commitment to their product quality. Thank you for a great product and a great customer experience!” – David McClung

As the owner of a large miniature horse sanctuary, we are often finding our needs to be met, somewhat challenged. Most equine operations gear towards full-sized horses. We then have to either adapt products or have them customized to fit our needs. However, when we found ourselves in need of a quarantine stall with relatively little advance notice, American Stalls not only fit the bill, but came through with flying colors.
The turnaround time to receive our order was super quick.

During the sales process, American Stalls made the decision-making process very easy and guided us with great information every step of the way. We love the look of the stalls and the high-quality materials. For portable stalls, they surprised us by how sturdy they are and we expect to use them for years to come. Overall, the team at American Stalls delivered superior customer support. We loved meeting Yash in-person even as he traveled through the Midwest and we were proud to show him our new facility. Lastly, I absolutely recommend American Stalls to any equestrian facility who cares about quality and professionalism. We couldn’t be happier with our decision to purchase our stalls from them.

No tools required, no small parts to get lost in the shuffle… We chose to have two yoked gates so that the children and seniors we visit off-site can access the minis from both sides of the stall. We just set up our new stalls for our 4-H Horse Camp and the kids and parents all loved them. They were very excited about the bars allowing for plenty of airflow as our old portable stalls were solid all the way to the top. The new stalls went together easier too! The presenters at the horse camp were so impressed they asked where we got the stalls from and are thinking about purchasing some of their own.

Working with American Stalls was a pleasure. The representatives were extremely cordial and responsive and attentive to our needs. They assisted us with all aspects of the transaction both professionally and thoroughly. Any inquiries made were met with a more than timely response.
The portable stalls assemble quickly, go together easily and have withstood a full year of shows with no visible wear and tear, a true testament to their durability. The stalls are both attractive and durable as has been proven by the number of horses that have been in and out of the stalls. Their website contains loads of pictures, and the information is very representative of the product; a good quality product with good customer service.
