Nestled in the golden hills of Rancho Santa Fe, California, this is the kind of project that reminds us exactly why we do what we do. A custom-designed barn built for a family who wanted the best of both worlds: a beautifully appointed party barn for hosting and entertaining, alongside a fully functional two-stall working horse barn featuring a pair of spacious 12x12 stalls.
Today, we're walking you through every detail that makes this project truly one of a kind.

First Impressions: A Barn That Stops You in Your Tracks
Pulling up to this property, the first thing you notice is the subtle, yet grand presence of the barn. The two-story structure commands attention with its natural cedar siding, a handsome central cupola, and a wide cobblestone courtyard that sets the stage for the elegance within.
Flanking the main entrance are a pair of large, custom Sliding Barn Doors that span the full width of the entry. These doors feature our signature cross buck design. This is a design detail that nods to classic American barn aesthetics while delivering a bold, modern visual impact. The contrast of our dark bronze powder cot finish against the warm, weathered wood siding gives this barn a look that is both timeless and sophisticated.
Gooseneck Barn Lights line the facade, casting a warm glow over the courtyard that makes the barn as beautiful at dusk as it is in the California sun. Our client then chose to hang string lights to crisscross the open air above the cobblestone, a detail that perfectly captures the party barn spirit of this build.

The Entry Doors: Bold, Beautiful, and Built to Last
Step closer and you'll appreciate the craftsmanship of these Sliding Barn Entry Doors in detail. Each barn door panel is crafted using our heavy-duty 2"x4" steel tubing. The interior design of each door features our signature cross buck design made from heavy-duty steel. It is then repeated across both the upper and lower sections, creating a striking geometric rhythm. Our client then chose a custom, specialize cast-iron door pull at the center to add a refined finishing touch. This touch elevates the hardware from functional to truly decorative.
These doors are built to handle the demands of daily use while looking impeccable for every event this family hosts. Whether they're swung open wide for a summer gathering or closed tight on a cool California evening, they make a statement every single time.

Welcome Inside the Barn
Step through those barn doors and you're immediately greeted by one of our favorite details of the entire project, a gorgeous hand-painted welcome sign arching over the entrance. Framed by the wide-open sliding doors and set against the warm, natural pine interior, this sign captures the heart and personality this family poured into every decision on this build.
Below the sign, the barn's interior features another pair of matching sliding Barn Doors. Within the barn, it opens up to reveal the low European Stall Fronts lining the aisle and our premium black Rubber Pavers underfoot, tying the whole look together.
Comfort from the Ground Up: Rubber Pavers
Before we get to the stalls, it's worth taking a moment to appreciate what's beneath your feet. The barn aisle is filled throughout with our 1-3/4" thick Rubber Pavers in a deep, striking black. These Interlocking Rubber Pavers provide a cushioned, slip-resistant surface that is kind to both horses and the people who care for them day in and day out.
The rich black color creates a sharp contrast against the light natural pine of the walls and stall panels — a design pairing that runs throughout this barn and gives it that polished, high-end feel.
Stall Fronts: European Style Meets California Living
At the heart of this barn are two custom European Stall Fronts, each opening into a generous 12x12 stall. These European Stall Fronts feature our "low" European style with a beautiful bent swoop. Each stall front features our signature swooping wing in dark bronze powder-coated steel. Each horse stall is paired with vertical bar grillwork (on door bottom, 1" bars safely spaced on 2.5" centers) along with a lumber design on the wings, a combination that is as functional as it is beautiful.
The low-swooping European design is intentional. It encourages natural interaction among horses, allowing them to see and connect with their barnmates while still having their own defined, comfortable space. Every component is built to withstand the rigors of daily barn life without ever compromising on appearance.
Inside the Stalls: Details That Matter
Inside each stall, the family's horses are set up for maximum comfort. Our client decided to include our Stall Mattress Systems beneath the bedding, providing superior cushioning and joint support, an investment in their long-term health and wellbeing. Stable Comfort Stall Mattresses are one of our favorite additions in any barn, and we are confident that our clients' horses will love them!

Each stall opening also includes our Bedding Blockers to keep shavings neatly contained inside the stall, making daily cleaning faster and more efficient. It's one of those small details that barn owners genuinely appreciate every single morning.
Our client chose a full-grilled Stall Partition to be installed between the two horse stalls. Each Stall Partition is built with 1" bars on top and matching lumber infill (bottom) to keep the aesthetic consistent throughout, because in a barn this beautiful, every detail counts.
Dutch Doors: Functionality Meets Farmhouse Charm
One of the standout exterior features of this build is the various Dutch Doors providing direct outdoor access from the stalls to the paddock area. These split doors, with the upper and lower halves operating independently, allow the horses to put their heads out and enjoy the fresh Rancho Santa Fe air and sunshine while remaining safely contained inside.

The cross-buck design flows from the Barn Entry Doors to these Dutch Doors. The iconic "x" design is seen on the lower door of each Dutch Door and ties directly back to the large sliding entry doors, creating a cohesive design language across the entire exterior of the barn. It's a thoughtful touch that makes this feel like a truly custom, purpose-built property rather than an off-the-shelf solution.
The Side Exterior: Built for the California Climate
The side elevation of the barn reveals another layer of this project's thoughtful design. A row of Dutch door openings with matching wooden shutters lines the exterior wall, each positioned to maximize natural cross-ventilation through the barn, a crucial feature in Southern California's warm climate. Additionally, our team custom-built exterior man doors with glass designs to provide beautiful doors throughout the barn's side elevation.
Overhead, the gooseneck barn lights continue along this elevation, ensuring the barn is beautifully lit and functional from every angle. The wooden post-and-rail paddock fence framing the foreground completes the picture of a property designed with the whole experience in mind, not just the building itself.
