Every finished barn starts as an idea that an owner has carried around for years. For this Austin, Texas equestrian, the idea was simple: a working barn that felt calm to walk into, held up to Central Texas weather.
The result sits on a gently rolling property outside Austin, framed by mature oaks and open pasture. A black exterior, warm wood accents, and a wide covered walkway that wraps around the entire structure give the barn a modern feel without shouting. Inside, American Stalls provided: Full-sized Stall Gates with Universal Gate Latches, Custom Grillwork for the Stall Fronts and Partitions, Dutch Doors on the exterior stall runs, and Barn Entry Doors at both ends of the aisle.
The Approach
Pulling up to the barn, the first thing you notice is the color. The black exterior sits quietly against the Texas sky, letting the warm wood of the doors show. The covered paddocks wrap both sides of the barn, so horses have shade throughout the day, and the owner has a dry path in any kind of weather.
The driveway curves past a landscaped front lawn and opens into a wide paved area right in front of the entrance, with plenty of room to park, turn a trailer around, or hold a horse while a stall is being finished. Black steel fencing outlines the paddocks on either side and ties the whole property together.

Barn Entry Doors
At each end of the aisle, a set of American Stalls Barn Entry Doors anchors the building. The doors are Sliding Barn Doors built on a heavy-duty black steel frame with warm wood infill, hung on American Stalls trolleys and track system, and finished with solid stainless steel door handles. Each door is fitted with a solid 304 stainless steel handle, machined in-house at American Stalls, and the openings are wide enough for horses and equipment to move through safely.
From the outside, they frame a clean view down the aisle and out the far end of the barn to the hill and beyond. It's one of the small details the owner loves. On a quiet morning, walking up and seeing straight through the barn feels calm and grounding.
Stalls and Grillwork
Step inside, and the barn opens into a bright, generous aisle. Two brass chandeliers hang down the center line, a ceiling fan moves air on hot afternoons, and the polished concrete floor keeps everything easy to sweep and hose down.
The Stall Gates and Partitions are built with American Stalls Custom Grillwork. The top bars give the horses full view of the aisle and their neighbors, while the mesh improves ventilation, and each front is finished with horizontal wood infill. The look is consistent from the outside of the barn to the inside of the stalls.
Each stall opens with a Full-Sized Stall Gate. The wider opening makes a real difference on the days when a horse is fresh or a handler is working alone. The gates are secured with the Universal Gate Latch, a stainless steel latch that opens cleanly with one hand and holds firm when a horse leans against it.
Dutch Doors and Exterior Runs
Every stall opens to a covered outdoor run through a Dutch Door on the back. The Dutch Doors match the look of the barn entry doors: a black steel frame and wood infill.
On mild mornings, the owner can open just the top half. The horse gets a view out and a breeze coming through the stall, and turnout stays on the owner's schedule instead of the horse's. The outdoor runs sit under the roof, so horses can step outside without standing in the direct summer sun. Black steel fencing outlines each run, and the transition from stall to run is level and clean.
A Quiet, Working Barn
The details that make this barn work are not the loud ones. The Full-sized Gates, the one-hand latches, the grillwork spacing, and the way the Dutch Doors line up with the run fencing, all of it was chosen with everyday use in mind.
